I somehow couldn't seem to find the right gear for this one. I don't know if it was an omen or not but I realized just before the start that I had forgotten to recharge my Garmin after the 5k on the previous week. Hence it went dead somewhere between 1 and 2 miles. However, I'm not sure that really made too much difference in the end. I went out at about 6 minute pace which is where I wanted to be but my legs felt heavy and sluggish so I had slowed pretty significantly by mile 3. That was also when we started winding through neighborhoods and the course got hillier. I was able to close the gap with the two runners ahead of me but was not quite able to catch them at the end. For those who have not run this 10 k course, the first half has longer straights and is somewhat rolling. The second half is hillier and winds into a neighborhood before turning around. The race is well run but this is not one of my favorite courses. The race served its purpose as a tuneup but was certainly not one of my top performances. For comparison, my 10k split two days ago in the Raleigh Rocks half marathon was close to my final time for this race. Great job to Brandon Carter for his win in the 5k!!
