| Run the Ridge |
| This may be the hilliest race I have ever run, although I have to say I don't go out of my way to run on hills. I knew since it was a small field that I would be able to know what place I was in overall during the race, which is certainly not always the case for me. As we started up the first hill only a quarter mile in I was in 6th place, and 2 of the people in front of me looked like fast runners. (I, like many runners consider someone to be fast if they are faster than me.) A half mile later at the top of the hill I was up to 3rd, but the lead runner was almost out of sight, and the guy in second was about 50 meters ahead of me. During the 2nd mile, which included more hills, I slowly gained on second place and made a pass with about a mile to go. I stayed in 2nd the rest of the way for my first ever overall award! I felt like I was running scared, since I didn't want to get passed and lose my big chance, since someone with my speed doesn't get a chance to win an overall award too often. Running scared either made me faster, or the course was a little short, since this is my best 5K time of the year! |
